Cyber Monday is coming in just 6 days. Is your ecommerce website ready for the onslaught of cybershoppers? Here are some tips to prepare your website for the biggest online shopping day of the year.

1. Test your shopping cart thoroughly.

A. Can web visitors easily complete their transaction?

B. Does the transaction complete quickly?

C. Are the directed to the correct confirmation page?

D. Do you have an upsell or additional offer on your confirmation page?

E. Do you have a series of follow up email messages queued that validate the purchase by providing links to user guides or “how to” information? You can also upsell them over time by continuing to send the valuable information.

2. Test your Opt In forms.

A. Does the form complete properly and quickly?

B. Are the directed to the correct confirmation page?

C. Do the links to the digital download work properly?

D. Do you have an upsell or additional offer on your confirmation page?

E. Do have a series of follow up email messages queued to build a relationship with the reader?

3. Is your Google Analytics working properly? You want to know how many visitors come to your site, how long they stay, which pages they like best, and where they came from.

4. Do you have enough bandwidth allocated for your website? Check your webhosting control panel to make sure you have enough bandwidth available. There’s nothing worse than seeing that “Bandwidth Exceeded” error message instead of the products on your website.

5. Do you have enough disk space allocated for your website? Check your webhosting control panel to make sure you have enough disk space available so your site doesn’t crash on CyberMonday.

6. What is your contingency plan in case your website fails or something breaks during CyberMonday? Who will be monitoring your site? Who will respond to customer requests? Who will fix the problems as they arise? Have a clear, documented plan of action and a team in place to support your website.

I can’t stress enough that you need to test, test and test again this week before CyberMonday. Make sure everything works perfectly now and have your team in place to respond to outages if they occur.

Will Microsoft Get Hostile?

The deadline passed on Saturday for Yahoo’s response to Microsoft’s bid to merge the two internet giants. Microsoft feels that they need to join forces with Yahoo for both companies to survive the Google onslaught. Alone Microsoft or Yahoo doesn’t stand a chance.  Marc Andreessen has a great analysis of the deal in his blog at:

http://blog.pmarca.com/2008/04/if-microsoft-go.html

The Wall Street Journal also has their take on the deal at http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120928269478947675.html?mod=technology_main_whats_news

Meanwhile Yahoo is busy making paid search deals with Google and has approached other companies like AOL/Time Warner about merging. It looks like Yahoo will try anything to avoid merging with Microsoft. There was no word today from Yahoo or Microsoft so stay tuned. Are they working out a deal or are they just avoiding each other. Something big is going to happen before this ends whether it’s a new company called MicroHoo or Yahoo will jump in bed with someone else to avoid the hostile takeover bid.

I’ll keep you posted!
