CHANGE – Proof that’s it already happening!

barack_obamaYesterday the world witnessed history with the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. President Obama promised change in America and change in the world if he was elected. We elected him and he’s already providing change in the first 24 hours.

Yes there are the executive orders he executed seconds after he was sworn in (with the wrong oath of office, thanks to Chief Justice John Roberts!). He also froze the wages of the White House staff and turned on a brand new look to the White House website

But I’m talking about real change. The change that matters to all of us.

What change am I talking about?

I like to visit my local Starbucks daily, sometimes a couple of times a day. A few months ago I could barely get in the door no matter what time of day I went. Business was booming at Starbucks as we satisfied our caffeine addiction. The economy was flying high and so were we!

Then the economy tanked and Starbucks was empty no matter what time I went. Did the economy cause a slowdown at Starbucks or did Starbucks cause the ecomonic slowdown? I don’t know for sure but something really exciting happened today when I went to Starbucks.

The store was packed this morning. The line was out the door. Every table was full, inside and out, even though it’s cloudy and cold this morning. The energy level was incredible and you could feel the buzz across the parking lot. Everyone was in a great mood and chatting away. Just like the old days (2 months ago!)

I have no scientific evidence to prove my assumption but I really think the increased business today was caused by the inauguration of President Obama. He’s lifted our spirits with his enthusiasm and charisma. We have hope that everything will be okay and faith that he will lead us out of this horrible economic disaster.

So what do we do to celebrate? We run out to Starbucks and spend some money!!

Obama Plus Social Media = History

Barack Obama uses Social Media to win the election

Yesterday we made history in the US by electing Barack Obama as our 44th President. Obama overcame numerous obstacles to win the election. Besides being the first African American to win the presidency, he had to beat Hillary Clinton in a heated primary election. Never before were we given the choice to choose either a woman or a black man to be our next president in the primary election. Obama also had to overcome the perception that he lacked the politcal experience to be our next president.

So how did Obama do the impossible? Of course he started by surrounding himself with an incredible team of strategists and campaign advisors. They created an aggressive plan and executed flawlessly. They broke down so many barriers and crossed into states that were considered "off limits" to the Democrats.

I think one the biggest reasons Obama succeeded was because they embraced Social Media from the start and engaged millions of 18-25 year olds that never participated in elections. I laughed with I heard Obama had a Facebook page. I laughed even harder when I heard he was on MySpace. Then I heard he was using Twitter! Why in the world would someone running for president want to be on Twitter?

It’s so clear now why he did it. He reached out to a generation that never affected an election before. He engaged them with their own toys and spoke their language. He built online communities that attracted millions of 18-25 year olds and got them excited about the political process. There were more registered voters and more votes cast in this election than ever and many were the younger generation.

Not only did the 18-25 year olds participate in the online communities, they joined the offline campaign. They worked their tails off for Obama because he reached out to them and engaged them on their terms. They bought into what he was saying and they helped create a grass roots effort never seen before. They hit the streets and got millions of Americans involved in the election. As the buzz grew for the Democrats, the Republican buzz grew just as fast.

Everyone was engaged in this election which is so great to see. Elections were become stale and boring. Peoeple didn’t feel like they could make a difference so many didn’t bother to vote. Less than 50% of all eligible voters would elect our officials. It was very sad to watch.

Now Obama has changed the playing field forever and his use of Social Media leveled the playing field for everyone. Now even the underdogs can make a difference using the power of online commmunities.

McCain – Obama Debate II – view it by keywords

Did you see Debate II – McCain vs. Obama last night? I didn’t get to see this one and from the commentary I didn’t miss much. Both candidates are playing it safe and not sticking out their neck. Is this the time to make your move to win the race. It’s like watching a NASCAR race where all the drivers are afraid to take the lead and they’re all coasting safely around the track waiting for the finish line. Come on guys take off the gloves and get nasty already or lets get Hillary and Sarah to go a few rounds. That would be a pay-per-view bonanza!

If you save a ton of time you can watch the debate and select the parts you want to watch by keyword. MSNBC has a video replay sorted by keyword. Select your favorite keywords and the video plays only those moments of the debate related to those keywords.

We can rent movies and watch only the parts that relate to our favorite keywords and save hours of time! We can live our entire lives based on our favorite keywords and ignore the rest of the garbage out there!

Sarah Palin made me do it…

I don’t know about you but I’m sick and tired of this presidential election. The media scrutinizes every syllable the candidates speak and twist everything out of context. The simplest phrase is blown out of proportion and spreads like wildfire around the internet. It’s hard to tell fact from fiction making it harder to know what each candidate stands for.

John McCain comments about the war in Iraq and Barack Obama responds almost instantly in a speech a thousand miles away. Sarah Palin makes a speech in Michigan and Joe Biden responds instantly from Florida.

People are twittering day and night about the election and creating their own facts about the candidates. Wikipedia is changing by the minute with new “facts” about each candidate. Facebook conversations are burning bandwidth faster than we’re burning gasoline. This will become known as the Web 2.0 election.

Well, since Sarah Palin can come out of nowhere and become a instant celebrity, I thought I could use the power of Social Media to make a difference in this election. Take a look at this video and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

TEd Prodromou for President
